Do you need a little help figuring out how to take all of the awesome curriculum you selected for your children and make sure you teach it all? Follow along with Stacey as she shows you how she uses a yearly planner to map out her homeschool year.
Yearly Planner
Don’t forget to download the free yearly planner, available in PDF or Google Doc, to help you plan out your homeschool year.
Start Planning
1. Set-up your planner
The first thing you need to do is set up your planner with the current year, your student’s name(s), and fill in the appropriate subjects. Then you will need to mark how many “schooling” weeks are in each month. Sometimes there are holidays (like Christmas or Thanksgiving) where you won’t want to teach during a full week, so you want to make sure you don’t plan on those weeks.
2. Select a curriculum and see how many lessons you will need to teach throughout the whole year.
How many total lessons are in a full year of your chosen curriculum? Check your curriculum’s table of contents or teacher’s manual for this number.
3. Divide (don’t worry, you can use a calculator!)
Next take the total number of lessons for your curriculum and divide it by the total number of weeks in your homeschool year. For my All About Reading Lvl 2 curriculum, there were 57 lessons and I homeschool for 36 weeks out of the year, so I would need to teach 1.58 (let’s round up to 2) lessons per week to finish the curriculum by the end of the school year.
4. List the lessons you will complete each month
Now, start filling in the lessons you will need to complete each month with your new number in mind.
5. Repeat steps 2-4
Repeat steps 2-4 for each curriculum level and subject for each of your children for the school year.
Remember, this is a Flexible Yearly Plan
Don’t forget, it is okay if your yearly plan needs to be changed a time or two, or three, or eight! This is a rough guideline to let you know that you are heading in the right direction. If you aren’t meeting your yearly plan, take some time to reflect and figure out if you need to slow down the curriculum, or try not to miss lessons during the week. Whatever the reason, make the adjustment and then keep moving through your year!
