Jenny’s Favorite Homeschool Books

Books are one of the best ways to get some extra inspiration and support for your homeschool. I find that once I read a good homeschool book, I feel more motivated and re-energized. Take a look at my short list below of my favorite homeschool books for parents!

The Well-Trained Mind breaks down how you can implement the Classical method into your homeschool. I like how in depth it does into the whole process of homeschooling, and I have personally used many of the resources that they list per subject. This is a good book for new homeschoolers to read because it is straightforward and gives many examples of what homeschooling can look like.

The Well-Educated Mind and Rethinking School are also by Susan Wise Bauer, and are great companions to The Well-Educated Mind.

Dumbing Us Down is a book that has completely changed my perspective on the public school system. The author, John Taylor Gatto, was an award-winning teacher in New York before he decided to quit because he felt that public school was doing more harm than good. This book is beautifully written and really shines a light on how we can improve our children’s futures.

Free to Learn is written by scientist Peter Gray, who was once a frustrated parent of a misbehaving child in public school. When he enrolled his son in a nearby experimental school called The Sudbury Valley School, he saw a world of difference. This book emphasizes the importance of free time, play, and choice in a child’s education, allowing the child to have autonomy and a voice.
